Sonic 3 and Knuckles – How to Get Debugging Mode

In Sonic 3 and Knuckles, the debug mode can be accessed by pressing the A button on the console. The game will then play a sound test and you’ll hear a ring. This is the debug mode and it will let you know what you need to do in order to activate it.

Unused function of lightbulb

In Sonic 3 and Knuckles, the lightbulb has an unintended function. When placed in water, it will explode. In the game, this doesn’t happen, but if you use debug mode, you can view the animation. A similar object appears in the tech demo for Sonic 3, but it doesn’t appear in the final game. This object also doesn’t appear in the final version of Angel Island Zone Act 2.

Unused function of barrier eggman sub-boss

During the final boss battle, Sonic and Knuckles must battle the eggman sub-boss in the Mirage Saloon Zone Act 1. The player must defeat the giga-sized Eggman and then fight the ground-based Eggman. This boss is the same as the one found in Gigapolis Zone in Sonic Chaos. The player and the enemy must fight it together in Encore Mode.

Knuckles’ route is hidden underneath Sonic’s level, but it is a bit more difficult. However, it briefly flirts with the main path at the end. This route has only a few variations, such as knocking down barricades to reach a secret route.

The Eggman Airship’s design is similar to the Airship in Sonic 2 and was used during the Angel Island Zone in Sonic 3. It has flame jets and electromagnetic areas. It is also the only Sonic level to use Egg Capsules throughout the level. The Eggman Airship is the only one in Sonic games that has sound effects throughout the entire level.

The eggman is the only boss that can be played by all three characters in either version of the level. It consists of a rocket-like platform with a booster jet at the bottom and two columns in the middle, with laser guns on both sides. Sonic can shoot the Eggman from this platform. After defeating the Eggman, the next mechanical opponent will appear. It is a grey and yellow circular contraption with two spikeballs attached to it.

Besides the barrier eggman, this mini-boss also has an unusable function: a sprite that causes Sonic to vibrate intensely when hit. In addition, the mini-boss was used as an attack.
